iTunes U Downloads Top 300 Million

The New York Times caught up with 10 billion song download winner Louie Sulcer and asked him about his prize, a $10,000 iTunes gift card. Says the 71-year-old Sulcer,”I don’t think I’ll have to worry about buying birthday and Christmas presents anytime soon.”

Apple today announced that music fans have purchased and downloaded over 10 billion songs from the iTunes Store, the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store. The 10 billionth song, “Guess Things Happen That Way” by Johnny Cash, was purchased by Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Georgia. As the winner of the iTunes Countdown to 10 Billion Songs, Louie will receive a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card. iTunes is the number one music retailer in the world and features the world’s largest music catalog with over 12 million songs.

“We’re grateful to all of our customers for helping us reach this amazing milestone,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services, in the press release. “We’re proud that iTunes has become the number one music retailer in the world, and selling 10 billion songs is truly staggering.”

Apple’s iTunes Store currently has a catalog of over 12 million songs, over 55,000 TV episodes and over 8,500 movies including over 2,500 in high definition video.

Apple purges 5,000 ‘sexual’ apps from iTunes App Store

“Following last week’s revelation that Apple had reversed its policy on sexual content in the iPhone App Store, a new report claims more than 5,000 inappropriate applications have been removed from the download destination,” Katie Marsal reports for AppleInsider.

“Developer ChilliFresh, creator of the ‘Wobble iBoobs’ application removed from the App Store last week due to ‘numerous complaints’ from users, claimed that a discussion with Apple revealed the company removed more than 5,000 offending applications from the App Store,” Marsal reports. “The total number of removed applications is said to have amounted to roughly 3 percent of the entire App Store.”

Marsal reports, “ChilliFresh claimed that an Apple representative said images of both women and men in bikinis are inappropriate, as are words that have a sexual connotation. Apple allegedly is not allowing applications that can be ‘sexually arousing,’ or that imply sexual content.”

Algorithm attempts to predict when Apple’s iTunes Store will hit 10 billionth song

“I just love watching what smart people come up with. The latest is an algorithm to figure out when Apple will reach its 10 billionth song downloaded,” Jim Dalrymple reports for The Loop.

“Barry Schwartz, Mike Butler and Alex Fierro came up with a way to predict when the company will reach the milestone,” Dalrymple reports.

Create Complex Playlist in iTunes 9

Smart Playlists in iTunes 9 can now be more than just (A and B) or (A or B or C) to build a playlist. Now the rules can be combined and nested. In addition to the plus and minus buttons, there’s a new three-dot (ellipsis-like) button to generate the nested rules. For example, A and (B or C) was previously not possible.

In iTunes 9, you can now do this. First add rule A and set the top “Match” criteria to All. After you have rule A done, click on the three-dot button to get a lower level rule, add rule B and set its applicability pop-up to Any. Finally, click the plus sign and add rule C. This will create the logical structure of A and (B or C). You can get even more fancy and click the three-dot button again, and add a D or E conditional, giving you a final rule structure of A and (B or C and (D or E)).

The iTunes 9 help is silent about this new feature, but it’s quite powerful.
