Can Apple make enough iPads?

Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune,” Gene Munster’s team at Piper Jaffray called 50 Apple stores this week and found a ‘very limited’ supply of iPads”

Specifically:
• 37 (74%) of stores were completely sold out of all models
• All 50 (100%) were sold out of the 3G models
• 13 (26%) had only Wi-Fi models left to sell

Elmer-Dewitt reports, “With the international roll-out of the iPad scheduled to begin May 28 — a week from today — Munster believes that supply won’t catch up to demand until mid to late summer.”

Apple now worth eight times Dell’s market value

On October 6, 1997, in response to the question of what he’d do if he was in charge of Apple, Dell founder and CEO Michael Dell stood before a crowd of several thousand IT executives and answered flippantly, “What would I do? I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders.”

A little more than a month later, on November 10, 1997, new Apple Interim CEO (iCEO) Steve Jobs responded, speaking in front of an image of Michael Dell’s bulls-eye covered face, “We’re coming after you, you’re in our sights.”

On January 13, 2006, after a little more than eight years of hard work, Apple Inc. passed Dell, Inc. in market value, $72.13 billion vs. $71.97 billion at market close, respectively.

• 2X: On July 27, 2007, Apple’s value doubled that of Dell’s, $127.81 billion vs. $63.65 billion, respectively.

• 3X:On December 6, 2007, Apple’s market value passed 3 times that of Dell’s, $165.66 billion vs. $54.42 billion, respectively.

• 4X:On May 01, 2008, Apple’s market value quadrupled that of Dell’s, $158.66 billion vs. $38.97 billion, respectively.

• 5X:On February 12, 2009, Apple rose $2.60 to hit a market value of $88.37 billion or 5 times that of Dell’s $17.52 billion.

• 6X:On October 20, 2009, Apple rose $11.21 to $201.07 to hit a market value of $180.12 billion or more than 6 times that of Dell’s $29.97 billion.

• 7X:On January 26, 2010, Apple gained $7.57 to $210.64 to hit a market value of $189.72 billion or more than 7 times that of Dell’s current $27.03 billion.

• 8X:In NASDAQ trading today, Apple gained $1.95 to $239.74 to hit a market value of $218.12 billion or more than 8 times that of Dell’s current $25.84 billion.

Apple is also a debt-free company and currently has significantly more cash and short-term investments on-hand ($41.7 billion) than Dell Inc. is worth.

Got any snappy retorts now, Mr. Dell?

Apple marginalizing Adobe’s proprietary Flash as companies, designers shift to open HTML5

“The punches that Apple Inc. is throwing in its fight against Adobe Systems Inc. are beginning to land, prompting some companies to shift away from Adobe’s video and animation technology and forcing Web designers to work with competing standards,” Ben Worthen reports for The Wall Street Journal. “Programmers and Web designers say clients increasingly are asking that their websites or applications be compatible with Apple’s iPhone and iPad. Those sites can’t be built with Adobe’s Flash technology, which is used widely for online video and animation but which Apple has banned from its devices.”

“‘Since the iPad came out we’ve had a lot of clients say that they just don’t want Flash on their sites,’ said Chantelle Simoes, vice president at Ninth Degree Inc., a design firm in Dana Point, Calif., which has built websites for Sanyo and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. If current trends continue, Ms. Simoes said, her 10-person firm will need to hire people familiar with Apple’s development tools,” Worthen reports. “On Wednesday, Sports Illustrated, whose website uses Flash extensively, unveiled a Web app built with HTML 5. ‘We’re going forward on more than one front,’ said Terry McDonnell, editor of Sports Illustrated Group, a unit of Time Warner Inc… While that means having to maintain multiple versions of its properties, Mr. McDonnell said it doesn’t make sense to settle on one technology because Sports Illustrated needs to be able to reach readers no matter what device they use.”

Apple iPad sold out throughout Tri-State Region

“It appears that iPads are sold out all over the tri-state area, at Apple Stores, Best Buy stores, and even trusty Tekserve. And judging by recent tweets, they’re sold out in other parts of the country, too,” Dan Frommer reports for The Business Insider.

Why I dumped my Android-based HTC Desire and went back to my Apple iPhone

“My last blog post I wrote about tips for people moving to the HTC Desire from the iPhone. I was writing with the bliss of a new & shiny gadget in my hands,” Shane writes for Shasam.net. “But this post is why after a few weeks I have found myself back using my iPhone, whilst the HTC Desire now resides in my top drawer, probably never to see the light of day as my daily handset again.”

Shane writes, “Android just isn’t there yet. Sorry fans of the OS, but it’s like the best intentions of the open source community have produced an OS that has not learnt any lessons from the failings of the dated Windows Mobile OS, and along with the snazzy HTC Sense UI have actually made a number of brand new mistakes on the way.”

1. Android OS (whilst hidden behind the beauty that is HTC Sense) is an inherently geeky, inconsistent, temperamental and beta-like OS. It fails in numerous ways
2. Possibly more importantly, I have come to believe Android is not and can not be an “iPhone Killer”, nor really even a competitor

Shane writes, “Android just isn’t there yet, and the HTC Desire (or any Android handset) is no real competition for the iPhone ecosystem. Of course it’s not all about ecosystem (you need to compete vs iTunes etc) but it’s one area I don’t see anyone really focusing on and until they do I can’t see anyone really causing Apple concern.”

Apple using Flash alternative they’ve developed named ‘Gianduia’

“As Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight duke it out over their plugin-based, HTML-alternative web platforms, Apple is using Gianduia, its new a client-side, standards based framework for Rich Internet Apps, to create production quality online apps for its retail users,” Daniel Eran Dilger reports for AppleInsider

“Apple introduced Gianduia last summer at WOWODC (World of WebObjects Developer Conference), an independent event scheduled near the company’s own WWDC event in June,” Dilger reports. “It is likely that more information will surface at this year’s WOWODC and WWDC events.”

What Apple has that others lack

Simon Sinek has a simple but powerful model for inspirational leadership all starting with a golden circle and the question ‘Why?’ His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers — and as a counterpoint Tivo, which (until a recent court victory that tripled its stock price) appeared to be struggling.
