Microsoft’s Ballmer claims there isn’t a sizable market for tablets
“Last night’s keynote address by Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer came and went without a mention of a Microsoft tablet. Ballmer had a line up of products that included a tablet PC from HP. He spent less than a minute showing it off,” Laura Sydell reports for NPR.
“This morning, I interviewed Ballmer and asked him about the market for tablet/slate computers,” Sydell reports. “He made the excitement sound like empty chatter. He claimed to believe that there isn’t a sizeable market for the tablet. ‘They’re interesting,’ he said. ‘But it’s not like they’re big numbers compared to the total number of smart devices in the world.’”
“As the world knows, everyone is anticipating a tablet computer from Apple later this winter. Based on the veracity of past rumors about Apple, I believe this to be true,” Sydell reports. “I asked Ballmer, ‘Why would Apple spend so much money and time on a tablet if there wasn’t a big market?’ He deftly deflected my question saying, ‘You’d have to ask Apple.’”

Apple’s tablet will use multiple carriers, including Verizon’s 3G network, say sources
“Apple’s tablet will use Verizon’s wireless data network to connect to the Internet when users are out of range of a Wi-Fi hotspot, a Wall Street analyst today said his sources were reporting,” Gregg Keizer reports for Computerworld. “‘The tablet will be supported by multiple [mobile] carriers,’ said Brian Marshall of Broadpoint AmTech, citing unnamed sources he said were close to the situation. ‘Verizon and others,’ he continued. ‘Definitely Verizon. I’ve been told that’s a certainty.’”
“Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal (subscription required) added its voice to the clamor about an impending Apple tablet, saying that the device would be unveiled later this month but wouldn’t ship until March,” Keizer reports. “According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple has been working on two different material finishes for the tablet, which will sport a 10- or 11-in. screen.”
Keizer reports, “Most are betting that Apple will introduce the tablet the last week of this month… Already signed and sealed, Gottheil said, were deals with book, magazine and newspaper publishers; movie studios; and television networks. ‘Apple will have had to make a lot of deals with content providers by now if it is launching in March,’ he said.”

RUMOR: Apple ‘tablet’ launch imminent
“Apple is courting owners of US television networks, including CBS and Walt Disney, in the hope of launching a subscription television service over the internet by next year, people familiar with the discussions said,” Kenneth Li and Joseph Menn report for The Financial Times.
“The service is expected to be offered over Apple’s iTunes digital entertainment store, which sells movies and TV shows, but does not offer them for a recurring monthly fee,” Li and Menn report. “The debut of the service is among other entertainment and news services that the maker of the iPod and iPhone could offer on the ‘tablet’ computer it is widely expected to launch imminently.”
“‘The driver behind it [the tablet] will be content,’ said Kathryn Huberty, a Morgan Stanley analyst,” Li and Menn report. “Apple is preparing an announcement next month that many anticipate will be the official unveiling of its tablet, but the company has so far declined to confirm the existence of the device. Wall Street analysts expect mass production of an Apple tablet to begin as early as February.”

RUMOR: Steve Jobs plans Apple tablet launch in early 2010
“Steve Jobs has reportedly taken personal charge of the forthcoming Apple tablet, working to get the details right while aiming for a 2010 launch. Meanwhile, overtime in the Apple TV group, plus last week’s price cut, suggest a new model could be here soon,” David Coursey reports for IDG News Service.
Apple TV “appears on-track for a refresh. I am a tad concerned about the timing for this if units are going to be available in quantity in time for the holidays,” Coursey reports. “Sources tell me the Apple TV teams–hardware and software–have been putting in a lot of hours lately. How that translates into a ship date has yet to be revealed.”

That September Apple Tablet? More Like A 2010 Apple Tablet

At this point, it seems like people are just talking themselves in a circle about the rumored Apple Tablet. Everyone is so excited for it, not matter what it actually is, that they’re starting to convince themselves that it could drop as soon as next month. Rumors of that date started after an all-over-the-place report last month by the Financial Times, that seemed to suggest the tablet was both being prepared for September, and for the latter holiday season at the same time. As we said at the time, it seems unlikely that either are true.
