Engadget has received a tip “which has been confirmed by a source very close to Apple” that “details the outlook for the next version of theApple TV.”

Joshua Topolsky reports for Engadget, “According to our sources, this project has been in the works long before Google announced its TV solution, and it ties much more closely into Apple’s mobile offerings. The new architecture of the device will be based directly on the iPhone4, meaning it will get the same internals, down to that A4 CPU and a limited amount of flash storage — 16GB to be exact — though it will be capable of full 1080p HD (!).”
Topolsky reports, “The device is said to be quite small with a scarce amount of ports (only the power socket and video out), and has been described to some as “an iPhone without a screen.” Are you ready for the real shocker? According to our sources, the price-point for the device will be $99.”

According to the report, the next-gen AppleTV will focus on cloud-based storage featuring instant-on 1080p along with an option to utilize a Time Capsule as an external storage component. Topolsjy warns not to expect the new Apple TV to arrive at WWDC, “but development on the product is most definitely full steam ahead.”

“Following a refresh of its MacBook Pro line of notebooks in April, Apple could update its lightweight MacBook Air this week, with a new model expected to arrive on Tuesday,” Sam Oliver reports for AppleInsider.

“In April, the Australian Macworld correctly reported the arrival of new MacBook Pros,” Oliver reports. “The same source has come again to the Aussie publication, this time to send word of a MacBook Air refresh allegedly set to happen Tuesday.”

Oliver reports, “The source said a new product will arrive Tuesday with the model MC516LL/A K87 BETTER BTR-USA. The ‘better’ distinction reportedly means it is likely to be a Mac product, leading the tipster to suggest the refresh is a MacBook Air.”

MobileMe is Apple’s $99 per year service (it can be purchased for less) that keeps your email, contacts, and calendar information in the “cloud” and uses push technology to keep everything in sync across your iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, and the web automatically. MobileMe also offers MobileMe Gallery for sharing your photos, Find My iPhone and Find my iPad, which helps you locate your lost (or stolen) device, Remote Wipe, which allows you to remotely delete your personal information and restore devices to their to the factory settings, iDisk, for storing, accessing, and sharing files online (starts at 20GB), Me.com, a suite of ad-free web applications — Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Gallery, iDisk, and Find My iPhone — all accessible from a browser on any Mac or PC, Back to My Mac puts any Mac OS X Leopard- or Snow Leopard-based Mac you use within easy reach from anywhere, Secure iChat, which lets you protect your chats with robust, 128-bit encryption, the free iDisk app which lets you view files on your iDisk right on your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, share content from iPhoto, iMovie, QuickTime, and Aperture, seamless iWeb integration, personal domain name hosting, and more.

MobileMe was originally launched on January 5, 2000, as “iTools,” a free collection of Internet-based services for users of Mac OS 9. iTools was relaunched as “.Mac” on July 17, 2002, when it became a $99 per year subscription service. .Mac was relaunched as “MobileMe” at WWDC 2008 on July 9, 2008.

No timeframe was given for MobileMe to go free, other than: “sooner than later… depends on certain facilities going operational.”

That’s all we have at this time.

Again, this is an unconfirmed RUMOR.

“Users have jeered The New York Times‘ main iPad app, but the newspaper is listening to one in particular: We hear Steve Jobs is among the app’s most vociferous critics and has been shunning it,” Ryan Tate reports for The Business Insider.

“Jobs clearly wanted to make access to the electronic Times a big selling point for Apple’s tablet computer; the Apple CEO put the paper’s website at the center of full-page magazine ads for the iPad, and even shared the stage at iPad’s unveiling with a Times executive, who demoed a preliminary version of the paper’s iPad software,” Tate reports. “But Jobs doesn’t like the limited app the Times came out with, called ‘NYT Editors’ Choice,’ and his displeasure has been made known to senior Times Company executives, according to a source close to the paper. It has not been lost on said executives that Jobs and his underlings left the app in the shadows.”

Tate reports, “It’s easy to imagine what Jobs hates about the app: It lacks much of the newspaper’s content, even as said content is available free on nytimes.com. Users have reviewed the app with headlines like ‘Where’s the content???,’ ‘No content,’ ‘Content?,’ ‘Wow… disappointed’ and ‘is an upgrade with full content planned?’”

Full article, in which Tate reports that Times Company politics and/or an existing Kindle deal with Amazon might have something to do with the sparse “‘NYT Editors’ Choice” app, here.

“Apple began charting the future of their flagship computer Mac OS X today as the developers of tomorrow finally learned how they’ll be able to participate in it,” Rixstep reports.

“Apple will begin signing up independent software vendors (ISVs) for the 10.7 developer programme by early autumn 2010,” Rixstep reports. “Membership will cost $99 just as the iPhone programme and will include a number of benefits including free downloads of the Xcode developer tools and access to online API documentation.”

Rixstep reports, “Developers planning on marketing software for 10.7 will submit their products to the App Store as iPhone and now iPad developers have already done. 10.7 will have kernel support for (‘insistence on’) binaries signed with Apple’s root certificate. No software will be able to run on Mac OS X 10.7 without being approved and signed by Apple, Inc.”

“Slapping a root certificate on a binary running Snow Leopard or earlier doesn’t change anything: the certificate represents an additional executable section that can easily be removed. Individual apps can of course check for the presence of a certificate, but it’s not before the OS kernel itself insists on this certificate that program execution is totally in Apple’s control,” Rixstep reports. “It’s expected there’ll be efforts to ‘jailbreak’ 10.7 just as there have been with the iPhone and iPad systems.”

Full article here.

9 to 5 Mac is reporting that a developer they’ve contacted says that the facts are distorted in the Rixstep article:

Code signing for Mac Applications is already in place, and has been for a couple of versions of Mac OS X. There is a command line tool included in OS X (sorry, don’t recall the name) that can show the user which apps are signed, and by what certificates Contrary to the article, code signing of applications is already used by OS X.

You’ll notice that when you update some third party applications from, for example, v1.0 to v1.1, if that app stores data in you keychain, the first time you run the new version of the app you will get the popup window saying “Application X would like to use data stored in you keychain.” This is because the application is not signed, therefore the System can’t verify it is the same app from the same developer after it has been updated and the executable has changed on your disk.

You may not have noticed that when you update Safari or Mail or some third party apps, you do not get the dialogue, as these apps are signed, and the signing is still valid after the update, so the System can be sure the app has not been tampered with by a 3rd party, and it is OK to continue to allow it access to the keychain.

“Intel has served as Apple’s sole source for the microprocessors used in its notebook and desktop personal computers since the company began its transition away from PowerPC in 2006, but that may soon change given the company’s recent talks with Intel’s chief CPU rival Advanced Micro Devices,” Kasper Jade and Prince McLean report for AppleInsider. “Representatives for the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD have recently been seen on Apple’s Commuter Coach buses, and executives for the chipmaker have been spotted on their way out of meetings with members of Apple’s top brass, according to people familiar with the matter.”

“The meetings have reportedly included briefings by AMD that have since enabled Apple to begin working with AMD processors in its labs as part of an initiative to position the chips inside some of the company’s forthcoming products,” Jade and McLean report. “While AMD offers a variety of embedded processors, Apple is believed to be investigating the chipmaker’s workstation and notebook class CPUs.”

Jade and McLean report. “It is believed that Apple is working with AMD to expand its potential sources for CPUs in order to increase its flexibility and broaden its competitive options, but also likely in response to problems it has encountered with Intel. These issues include limited availability of new processors (which is rumored to have slowed Apple’s notebook refreshes) as well as new chipset designs imposed by Intel that have blocked the Mac maker’s plans to continue a partnership with NVidia to deliver a standardized chipset for use with its Intel processors across all of its consumer computer offerings.”

“The upcoming 4.0 reference release of Apple’s iPhone OS will deliver new support for running multiple concurrent third party apps, and allow users to switch between them using a windows management mechanism similar to one made popular on the company’s Mac OS X operating system,” Kasper Jade and Prince McLean report for AppleInsider.

“The technology, detailed by people familiar with Apple’s plans for the new firmware, will finally allow users to launch multiple apps in the background and quickly switch between them, as AppleInsider exclusively reported earlier this month. Currently, a running app must be quit when the user returns to the Home screen,” Jade and McLean report.
“Apple initially avoided an app model supporting multiple apps running at once to help preserve battery life and simplify the user experience. Other platforms that do support the launching of multiple apps, including Android and Windows Mobile, require users to manually manage system resources and kill off performance robbing background tasks,” Jade and McLean report. “Today’s iPhone 3.x firmware is a fully preemptive multitasking operating system, but it artificially restricts apps (other than specific ones bundled with the system by Apple) from running in the background.”

Jade and McLean report, “Those familiar with the design of iPhone 4.0 said that the user interface will resemble Apple’s desktop Expose feature, in that a key combination — reportedly hitting the Home button twice — will trigger an expose-like interface that brings up a series of icons representing the currently running apps, allowing users to quickly select the one they want to switch to directly. When a selection is made, the iPhone OS zooms out of the Expose task manager and transitions to that app.”

According to our tipster, Apple will rename iPhone OS to “iOS” in order to “better reflect the diversity of devices that will run the operating system: iPhone, iPod touch, and future devices to be announced.”

A YouTube video, not from our tipster, from “artmach1″ shows “iOS” on a background that seems to closely match Apple’s special event invitation (see below) along with the text description: shaky cam grab out of some apple tablet presentation rehearsal for tomorrows brand new thing—I think any way. might have been enhanced from a pen cam or something. or hidden in a backpack or a box of equipment.

“A tablet still might not be the only new hardware we see from Apple next week — the rumor mill is still churning out news that the “one more thing” next week will be a brand new version of the iPhone, set up on the Verizon network,” Mike Schramm reports for TUAW.

“It comes not from an anonymous source, but Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek,” Schramm reports. “If you ask me, this is one too many rumors not to be true — eventually, we’ll see an iPhone on the Verizon network. But I’m hesitant to agree it’ll be announced as early as next week.”
